File Extension PPS Overview

November 15, 2009

Extensions play a very important role in file handling; especially when sharing information across operating system and application platforms. Extensions act as markers to specific source applications that are related to the file. Normally, they are made up of 2 to 4 characters added to the filename, and are used by the operating system do determine which application to assign the files.

One of the commonly used extensions by the Microsoft Office Suite is the PPS. PPS is an extension assigned to Microsoft PowerPoint Slideshows by the 2003 and earlier versions. The current version has now changed to PPTX. PowerPoint Slideshows (PPS) are presentation files designed in a series of pages called slides and presented in an automated sequence to an audience. PowerPoint Slides are normally designed using various objects; text, shapes, pictures, graphs, charts, videos as well as sound. All are logically incorporated to create a particular message to be presented in a meeting, educational lecture, a workshop or a seminar, among other functions.

During the design of a PowerPoint slideshow presentation, the file normally has PPT extension. This means that the file is open for editing. Once you have added your text and inserted relevant objects, and the slideshow is ready for presentation, then you can save the file in a PPS presentation. When you open PPS files, the slideshow is supposed to run automatically without displaying the editing tool bars. Most programs that open PPS files will run in full screen.

Apart from the Microsoft PowerPoint Program, other applications that open files with the PPS extension include the PowerPoint Viewer, a free program from the Microsoft, and the Word Perfect. Powerpoint Viewer Active X from Viscom Group and the Open Office org Impress, an open source application from Sun Microsystems can also be used to view and edit the slideshows. However, it is good to note that applications may not have similar presentation features as they tend to differ from one program to another. For instance, some objects, animation and transition styles in Microsoft PowerPoint may look different when viewed in Open Office org Impress, and so on.

Beside lack of the right program to handle your file, other common file extension PPS errors are caused by damage in the file or problems with the registry. To resolve the problem, make sure that your computer is free from viral infections, and clean your operating system registry regularly.

Another extension similar to PPS is DOC which is used to represent textual document in Microsoft Office. You can find more information about file extension DOC on our site and in our other articles.
